Please allow me to go somewhat political for a moment. I hate doing this as I regard Starbasegeek as a refuge where geeks can come together and discuss nerd culture without worrying about offending anyone’s delicate sensibilities. The goal of this site is to discuss areas that are of particular importance to geekdom and to do so in a fun, light-hearted manner. Yet there is a wave of SJW nuts that seeks to suck all the fun and diversity of thought of out our geek culture. They exist in video gaming and in literature. This is why there is the GamerGate and Sad Puppies movement to wrest back control of these areas from the hive-mind collective of the social justice warriors.

I’m a recent discoverer of the Sad Puppies movement as my attentions are not really devoted to literature at the present time. When I began to dig deeper into the praise and criticisms of the movement, I was astonished at what I found, but, sadly, not surprised. I spend a great deal of time in the world of online games, so I’m very familiar with the GamerGate movement. While the mainstream press and its acolytes have smeared the movement as racist and sexist, it is anything but. The GamerGate movement has brought together conservatives, liberals, libertarians, and everything in-between to fight back against the crushing, anti-freedom movement of the SJW mob. What is astounding is that gamers and most developers have been quite successful as they’ve mounted a hard-won campaign against the pearl clutching snowflakes that get the vapors whenever anyone dares not to think 100% like them. In Star Trek terms, the SJW movement that is polluting geek culture is the Borg, who seek to assimilate everyone into their collective thought process and anyone who dares to think differently, no matter how small that difference may be, must be utterly destroyed and hounded into oblivion.

Why do social justice warriors hate freedom of thought and expression?

This brings me to the Sad Puppies movement that seeks to wrest the prestigious awards handed out to sci-fi and fantasy literature from the Borg-like clutches of the SJW mob that has ruled without challenge for quite a few years. Spearheading the SJW lockdown on freedom of thought and expression is the Tor publishing company. Their main club in patting each other on the back and beating down those who dare not to conform to their rigid ideological view is the Hugo Awards that are handed out at Worldcon. I’ve read stories by authors that had been threatened and verbally assaulted for just attending Worldcon and not subscribing to the far, far left worldview that is espoused by the typical SJW.

The Sad Puppies movement got quite a few of their authors nominated for various Hugo Awards, and this is where the social justice warrior Borg collective went into full scorched earth mode. It seems that each category has the option of “no award” that voters can choose. Enough of the SJW crowd voted that option so that five categories had no award winner. To put that into perspective, there have only been five no awards during the entire existence of the Hugo Awards.

Vox Day, who organized the Rabid Puppies list, said the following of this year’s Hugo Awards, “The scorched earth strategy being pursued by the SJWs in science fiction is evidence that we hold the initiative and we are winning. The fact that the SJWs would rather give out no award rather than honor an influential editor like Toni Weisskopf of Baen Books or science fiction grandmaster John C. Wright demonstrates the extent to which science fiction has been politicized and degraded by their far-left politics. The SJWs will try to portray this as a victory – they would try to portray suicide by self-cannibalism as a victory – but anyone who knows anything about history understands the significance of one side resorting to burning down its own houses in order to deny it to the enemy. That is a defensive tactic borne of desperation.”

I’ve read quite a few smears of the Sad Puppies and Rabid Puppies movements, and the same old tired clichés that I see used for GamerGate pop up. They’re far right kooks, racists, old white guys, etc. The reality is that the slate of authors that are part of the Sad Puppies and Rabid Puppies encompass the entire political spectrum. They’re interested in freedom of thought and freedom of expression, and they’re sick and tired of the livelihoods of those who do not conform to the SJW mandate being threatened. The social justice warriors that infest geek culture proclaim that they’re interested in diversity and freedom, but they’re actually utter intellectual fascists of the worst kind. They must be fought and defeated. If we don’t have real diversity of thought and opinion in sci-fi and fantasy literature, then we’ll lose an entire generation to the thought police that would even make 1984 look like a walk in the park. Remember when the only thing that mattered in sci-fi and fantasy books was whether or not the author told a good story? We didn’t realize how good we had it back then. We will return to those days again, and the recent Hugo Awards show that the insurrection is winning.
