Aug 192015

2015 continues to be a brutal year in regards to those performers who gave me a lot of fond childhood memories. While I understand that the performers who starred in the movies and TV shows I watched growing up are getting along in years (as I was born in 1970), it’s still sad to see them shuffle of this mortal coil. We’ve already lost Leonard Nimoy, Christopher Lee, Grace Lee Whitney, Rowdy Roddy Piper, and Patrick MacNee this year. Now we have another name, and Star Trek: The Original Series alum, to add to that list as news has come out that Yvonne Craig passed away last night due to breast cancer.

Yvonne Craig Batgirl
While she made a few movies, Yvonne Craig was really known for her work on TV. Most notably, she was Batgirl from the 1960s Batman show that starred Adam West. I figured many a young boy fell in love with her while watching the show in syndication. She also appeared on episodes of The Man from U.N.C.L.E., The Six Million Dollar Man, Land of the Giants, and The Wild, Wild West. Most Star Trek fans know her as the crazy Orion slave girl, Marta, in the episode “Whom Gods Destroy.” The coincidence is that I just watched that episode a few weeks ago as it was shown on Me-TV.

Yvonne Craig will be missed. She was a true pioneer in geekdom for her capable portrayal of Batgirl. She loved the character so much that she complained to DC Comics when they paralyzed Barbara Gordon in The Killing Joke. We wish to offer our condolences to her family for their loss.
