Like every other Star Trek fan, I was concerned when I read that Nichelle Nichols had suffered a stroke late last week. We then learned over the weekend that the stroke was a minor one, and that she is now recovering. We at Starbasegeek.com pray for a speedy and full recovery for our favorite communications specialist, Lt. Uhura. To say that Nichelle Nichols has been an inspiration to many over the last five decades is a major understatement.

On her official Facebook page, the following message was posted to update her fans: “The MRI showed that Nichelle Nichols had a MINOR stroke. She will start therapy this morning to evaluate how much damage was done, and try to determine her chances for a full or partial recovery. The therapists will test her hand at writing and legs to see if she can stand and walk on her own. Last night Nichelle remained alert, and cheerful.

When we told her about the love and support coming in from around the world she smiled and asked to see the posts on her facebook.

Thank you again for all of your kind words. Keep them coming because Nichelle is reading them.”

I was lucky enough to attend a panel of Nichelle Nichols and get her autograph at Dragon Con a few years ago. She was incredibly gracious and charming, and I loved getting to meet and talk with her for a few minutes. I was stunned that there was no line to get her autograph as there was just one person who walked away as I came up. Her autographed picture is definitely one of the highlights of my collection. What made that event even more memorable is that my brother was unable to get one for himself. Every time he went in to get her autograph, they were wheeling her out in her wheelchair. As the original Star Trek is his favorite show, by far, it drives him nuts when I taunt him with my Nichelle Nichols autographed picture. Again, we wish her a speedy and full recovery and look forward to seeing her at conventions for years to come.
