Marvel superheroes will now be physically seen on the streets of New York in real life as opposed to just being seen on the comic pages. It was announced today that the Marvel series being created by Netflix has agreed to film within the city. The series will focus on the heroes commonly found in Hell’s Kitchen: Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist. The series will begin filming later this summer and the deal between the Walt Disney Company (owner of Marvel Entertainment) and Netflix calls for four 13 episode series and a six-to-eight episode mini-series where all four heroes team up as “The Defenders.”

I think this deal is great on several levels. First and foremost, the creation of new live-action superhero shows is tremendous. I hope that this show is successful, which will eventually lead to more superhero shows being made. The second reason is that I love Netflix. I’m sick of cable where I pay for hundreds of channels that I never use. Streaming is the future and puts the power of content into the consumer’s hands. Lastly, it’s nice seeing some other Marvel Heroes besides the X-Men or Spiderman getting some love. I had hoped that the Agents of Shield series would have had some cameos but that hasn’t panned out.
