Sad news for Doctor Who fans as we’ve found out that actress Kate O’Mara has passed away at the age of 74. Those fans who are only familiar with the new series should make the effort and catch her two serials where she played The Rani. Her character was a Time Lord like the Doctor and the Master, and she too was a brilliant scientist. However, The Rani was evil and willingly experimented on other species. She wasn’t as flamboyant as the Master, which made her an extremely effective villain as she personified the danger of soulless science.

Kate O’Mara had a long and distinguished acting career, notably appearing on Dynasty as Joan Collins’ sister. Before she passed, O’Mara talked about playing The Rani again, saying, “If you put a much older woman in Doctor Who, they can identify with it. I think it’s quite an interesting concept, and if you remember things like Grimm’s fairy tales, the older woman is often the villainess, often the terrifying figure — why I do not know, but often she is. I think it’s an idea to be exploited.”

Colin Baker was incredibly saddened when he learned of her passing, tweeting, “Oh my goodness.  Kate O’Mara is no longer with us.  Sad sad news.  A delightful, committed and talented lady and actress.  We are the poorer.”

Our condolences to her family and friends.
